Operation Encounter is a short course run in churches and colleges one session a week for five weeks. The aim of the course is to expose Christians to Applied Anthropology and techniques that missionaries have used for decades that work well here and overseas. It gets participants out interacting with people of other cultures and non-Christians during the week. Operation Encounter Teaching Applied Anthropology this five-step short course combined with field assignments will equip you for culturally appropriate outreach and ministry anywhere. Peel the cultural onion and get to the real core of other people?s values and beliefs.
There are five teaching sessions of two hours. Sessions include video clips, case studies and discussion groups. Progressive teaching is given on worldview and culture including cultural behaviour, values, beliefs and ultimate reality. The assignments involve completing a number of research questionnaires with a non-Christian contact. The questionnaire and the relationship-building process help them to consider issues relating to their spiritual journey and is usually enjoyed by both parties.
For too long we have had simplistic one or two step evangelism processes which may be offensive or miss the mark with the person you are trying to reach. Operation Encounter is not an evangelism course but takes a step back to looking at Culture and worldview. This helps you to carefully and gently work with people in a way that will help explore their worldview and beliefs before presenting the gospel. This course teaches Applied Anthropology but may be used as pre-evangelism, as it allows you to then contextualize the gospel in a way that will speak to them best and ensures you develop a friendship and keep them as friends throughout the process. |
