This passage has been criticized by many. They say: "There was no such king as Belshazzar." "The King at the time was Nabonidus." "And what's this business of the third highest ruler in the land?" Nabonidus' cylinder was found in 1854. It is now located in the British Museum. It states that Nabonidus was king and Belshazzar was his son or grandson. It states -- "May I, Nabonidus, King of Babylon . . . may I have my fill of life. As for Belshazzar, my first born son, my dear offering, grant that his days be long O Shamash." Nabonidus was absent from Babylon so he left Belshazzar in charge. Daniel ended up as third in command. So, Daniel was correct! |
