A Strategic Partnership with Tonga PDF Print E-mail

By John Rentz.

With the adoption of Vision 2025 at International Conference in 1999, Wycliffe leaders acknowledged that today’s translation challenge requires our organisations to “give priority to… forming additional strategic partnerships, and working together to develop creative approaches appropriate to each context.”

At the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga’s (FWCT) Conference at Centenary Church in Nuku’alofa in June 2009, this vision moved one step closer to reality as a young Tongan couple received an appointment to serve with Wycliffe Bible Translators.  Wycliffe NZ Director Wayne Freeman, along with Associate Director John Rentz, was on hand to witness the historic event.  This development marks the culmination of several years of dialogue between the Rev. Dr. Tevita Tonga Mohenoa Puloka, principal of Sia’atoutai Theological College, and Wycliffe’s Asia-Pacific Area office.

The Rev. Fileti Taufa Taumoha’apai and his wife Tiana, having completed their programme of study at Sia’atoutai, are now beginning to serve a Conference appointment to Wycliffe; initially they will undertake preliminary studies in NZ prior to enrolling in the advanced linguistics course offered at EQUIP, a Wycliffe training institution located outside Melbourne.

Ultimately the couple plan to serve the Bible translation movement in Papua New Guinea, continuing a tradition begun by Fileti’s grandfather who served as a missionary there for many years.  At a recent meeting to prepare the couple for this new assignment, Dr. Mohenoa stated that this appointment marks the beginning of a wave of Tongans who will serve the Bible translation movement.

Lord, may it be so!
