A Word from the Director...Welcome to another issue of Living Words. Is Bible translation quicker and easier because of Information Technology (IT) and computers? Absolutely! The follow up question often asked is “I have IT skills, how and where can I get involved?” This issue tells some of the ways IT is being used and the opportunities to be part of our mission “to see the scriptures made available through Bible translation to all peoples in the language they know best”. Tribute to David Hope-CrossOver a year ago, Wycliffe New Zealand’s then Council chairman, David Hope-Cross, died. David served Wycliffe on the Council for over five years, and had battled with illness in his last few years. He was often amazed at the work of Bible translation, particularly Vision 2025 – a 20+ year goal. In David’s business, a long term perspective of three years surprised others who looked for immediate gains. Read more... Four Crash in Lightening Strike!November 2006, Steve Sweetman stepped off the plane in Nairobi, Kenya, to find the East Congo group in absolute chaos! They had been struggling a whole month with a major malfunction in their computer system. A lightning strike or power surge had fried their four servers making their data unattainable. Read More... Disney world, Sea world, Kennedy Space Centre, Universal Studios, hurricanes, palm shaded beaches with tourists lounging about? Just down the road from all these wonderful attractions is the main Wycliffe centre for the USA. Cathy Lai from Christchurch, (originally from Taiwan), spent one year at Orlando, designing the new Wycliffe USA website – one of the largest sites in the Wycliffe world. Read More... Three days a week he works at the Wycliffe NZ office in Manukau, in charge of computer and phone support for the five mission groups at the centre, as well as working with new inquirers to Wycliffe.
